Eternal Summer
"Follow Me to Forbes Field"
As a child of the 1960's growing up in Pittsburgh, Forbes Field had always played a large part in my summers; whether it was experiencing the opportunity to sit in the stands on any Saturday afternoon and cheer on our “flanneled corsairs,” or listening to Bob Prince broadcast a twi-night double header while sitting on our back porch with my father. Gazing into the far-off hills of Pittsburgh, I could see the haze of the ball park's light towers awash in the Oakland sky. Engrossed in Prince's home spun rhetoric, my child's imagination would conjure heroic images of Clemente, Stargell and Maz. It gave me the feeling that I was there.....but only a few miles away in the really cheap seats.
This newest creation, “Eternal Summer, Follow Me to Forbes Field” depicts sixty-one years (1909-1970) of those golden days. Flashbacks of Bill Virdon hitting a home run a long way into the deep summer night, the thrill of getting Roberto Clemente's autograph, how bittersweet it was to watch Bill Mazeroski stepping on second base for the final out ever at Forbes Field; it's images like these that have had a great impact on my art.
I hope this artwork evokes in you as many cherished baseball memories as it does for me – of the halcyon days of our youth, of simpler times and of the “Grand Lady of Schenley Park”.....memories that will forever be a part of our Eternal Summer.
